ABOUT THE NHPO-MEMPHIS The National Hispanic Professional Organization, founded in 2004, came to Memphis in July 2009. That’s when over 60 Hispanic/Latino professionals from the Memphis and Mid-South legal, educational, small business, nonprofit, healthcare, realty, insurance, and corporate worlds to found NHPO-Memphis. Shawn Wilkins, Sr. of State Farm convened the group and stressed the importance of professional development, his colleague Lisa Maples presented the initial business plan, and Joaquín Villarreal of FedEx shared an overview and call to action on mentoring and leadership.. In its first two and one-half years of existence, NHPO-Memphis has held leadership institutes, awarded college scholarships, recognized individual and organizational contributions to the local Hispanic/Latino community through awards banquets, held job fairs, provided professional development, and gathered dozens of times for monthly networking luncheons. In August 2011, Alisha Dumas assumed the chairmanship of the NHPO-Memphis Board. Under her leadership, the organization has continued to grow in membership, range and quality of programs, and impact in Memphis and the Mid-South. |
